A Parent’s Love

“Love is…love is a lot of things,” said one of my brothers at his wedding while trying to remember part of 1 Corinthians 13. Yes, love is a lot of things, but more importantly, love is an everyday, conscious action and choice to put another person’s best interests before yourself.  And a good marriage is but a shadow of Christ’s relationship with His bride.

My brothers and I were blessed to be raised in a loving family, especially compared to today’s environment, when commitment is often treated like a second class citizen and divorce is “the answer” when struggles arise. Our parents showed their love by setting boundaries; giving us encouragement; doing without so we could have our needs met; accepting us even when we were at our worst; and most of all, living their life in a way consistent with their belief in God.

Love triumphed when my father had an illness that changed him while my mother went through a lot of challenges to be there for him. She didn’t give up and neither did my father who fought to overcome the illness. Their love prevailed when my father, many years later, had another illness that would eventually take his life. My mother stayed by his side, taking care of him until the end.

Praise be to God for the love He has given us.

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”
~1 Cor. 13:4-8a
